Upcoming Amazon Fire TV and Roku Hardware Leaks Reveal Major Changes for Cord-Cutters

What the filings actually tell us

The leak is procedural: remotes go through FCC certification before the boxes do. No photos in these filings, but enough specs to work with.

The Amazon remote matches the size of the current Alexa Voice Remote — but it's Bluetooth Low Energy only. Translation: no IR blaster. If you're still using your Fire TV remote to control an old soundbar or AV receiver, that workflow is dead on the next generation.

Amazon already moved most of its Fire TV Stick line over to Vega OS, its Linux-based platform. The oldest models still standing are the Fire TV Stick 4K Max and the Fire TV Cube — both prime candidates for replacement at Amazon's typical September or October hardware event. Per analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Amazon is also aiming to drop MediaTek and Amlogic silicon for in-house chips, with a 2027 target that lines up with this refresh window.

Roku's four filings are the more interesting story. One ships without Roku's signature cloth tag — that's the tell. Cloth-less Roku remotes historically pair with partner-branded hardware, like Walmart Onn devices. The rest all run on replaceable batteries, not the rechargeable Voice Remote Pro setup. Standard bundled remotes for refreshed budget and mid-tier streamers, not premium.

The Alexa+ wildcard

This one matters more than the new hardware. Amazon just made Alexa+ free on every compatible Fire TV in the US — no Prime membership required, no $20/month surcharge. The update installs automatically.

What you actually get: natural-language search that handles plot descriptions instead of exact titles, follow-up questions, and direct smart home control through the TV. Amazon's own usage data says customers are having nearly twice as many conversations with Alexa+ versus the old Alexa, and selecting the first search result 40% more often. Take vendor stats with the usual grain of salt — but the directional signal is real. Voice search on Fire TV just got meaningfully less frustrating.

Catch for international buyers: Germany is still in the free trial phase, with a planned €22.99/month subscription for non-Prime users after it ends. No timeline yet on whether the free US rollout crosses the Atlantic.

What I'd actually do

Skip the Fire TV Stick 4K Max and Cube if you can hold out a few more weeks. A fall refresh with a new remote protocol and likely a custom Amazon chipset means the early-adopter tax is brutal right now.

Roku buyers: wait for the partner-branded refresh — likely Walmart Onn. Cloth-less remote signals the budget tier is getting updated, and that's where the value usually lives.

The free Alexa+ rollout is the genuine win. If you're already on Fire TV, you just got a real feature bump at zero cost. If you're not in the US, don't budget for that perk yet.
